Recent News HeartShare Builds New Playground for Pre-Schoolers

On a warm Saturday in September, 200 volunteers came together to build a new playground at HeartShare's Lefferts/Liberty Kiwanis First Step Early Childhood Center in Howard Beach, Queens. Thanks to KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit organization that envisions a great place to play within walking distance of all children in America, and financial sponsor Washington Mutual, HeartShare's children with developmental delays now have a wonderful new playground to use daily.

Volunteers from Washington Mutual and HeartShare assembled 4 play structures, constructed 2 planter-benches and moved 20,000 square feet of mulch. Children of the volunteers also helped by painting signs to hang on the fences. However, none of this work could have been completed in 6 hours had it not been for the volunteers from ConEdison who were on site two days earlier to drill all the needed holes for the support poles.

The children in the pre-school program were overjoyed when they arrived at school the following Monday. HeartShare is grateful to everyone who helped to make this day possible.
