Recent News New Programs for Individuals with Autism Open

Following its mission of expanding opportunities and enhancing lives, earlier this month, HeartShare opened new programs on Staten Island--the Salvatore A. Calabrese Residence and the Serving People with Autism (SPA) Respite Program.

The Salvatore A. Calabrese Residence is home to four adults with autism spectrum disorders. For all of these residents, it is the first time they will be living in a group home, marking a major step in their lives.

The SPA Overnight Respite Program is a week-long, overnight respite program for individuals with autism spectrum disorders. Serving indiviudals from age 7 and older who live with their families in Brooklyn or Staten Island, this is the first program of its kind for HeartShare.

The Staten Island Community Habilitation Program, formerly known as At-Home Residential Habilitation, has been serving individuals with autism since 2008. Collectively, these three programs are known as HeartShare's Staten Island Residential Autism Services (SIRAS).

These programs join HeartShare's Staten Island Partnering with Autistic CiTizens (PACT) Day Habilitation Program which is for young adults who have graduated from high school and are entering the world of adult day services. This program offers higher staff ratio and services designed to specifically address the learning, socialization and communication needs of individuals with autism spectrum disorders.
