Becoming vital members of the community is a key element of HeartShare's Day Programs for adults with developmental disabilities. Most participants have job sites they go to once or twice a week.
Depending upon the job location, participants may travel via van, public transportation or walk, increasing their levels of independence.
Jobs are chosen based on the individuals' interests and goals. George, for example, likes to clean things and keep them in order, so he works at a local deli cleaning refrigerator doors and stocking shelves.
Other jobs our participants are currently involved with include preparing lunch for a near-by senior center and sorting supplies at an arts and crafts store.
For animal lovers like Anthony and Harold, feeding horses at a stable in Manhattan gives them an opportunity to be around animals. All of these opportunities may seem simple, but they are helping to break down barriers that individuals with developmental disabilities face every day.
