Who is eligible for admission into The HeartShare School?
The HeartShare School is approved by the New York State Education Department to accept children diagnosed with Autism and the Spectrum Disorders as well as children diagnosed with Mental Retardation.
What is the teaching approach at The HeartShare School?
The HeartShare School utilizes various teaching methodologies to maximize the learning potential for each individual student. Applied Behavior Analysis, with 1:1 discrete trial instruction, and aspects of the TEACCH approach are used within a self-contained, structured classroom setting.
What is the student-teacher ratio?
The HeartShare School has three classrooms with 8 students, 1 teacher, and 3 teacher assistants, as well as two classrooms with 12 students, 1 teacher, and 4 teacher assistants.
What is the age range in the classroom?
In the classrooms with 8 children, children's range of age may be up to three years. In the classrooms with 12 children, the age range may be greater as long as children are placed within a functional group.
Does my child have to participate in state testing?
No. All children at The HeartShare School follow the New York State alternate assessment guidelines.
How frequently will my child be evaluated?
Children are assessed annually and formally evaluated every three years.
How often will I receive progress reports?
Each child's Individualized Education Plan is updated four times per year.
What related services will my child receive at The HeartShare School?
Children receive related services as mandated on their Individualized Education Plans such as speech, physical, and occupational therapies, as well as counseling services. In addition, the school psychologist provides social skills groups for students.
Does The HeartShare School's program encourage recreational time?
Yes. The HeartShare School has an outdoor playground, which was built in June, 2007. It contains a tire swing, climbing wall, play structure, slide and other components to enhance the child's educational experience. Indoor recreational space is also available.
Can I be involved in my child's school?
Absolutely! The HeartShare School employs an open-school policy and parents are welcome at any time. Parents have opportunities to participate in team meetings regarding their child's educational plan, parent networking groups, holiday celebrations and special occasions.
Where is The HeartShare School located?
The HeartShare School is located at 1825 Bath Avenue, in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, NY.
Is there tuition for the children who attend The HeartShare School?
No. Funding for children who attend The HeartShare School is provided by the New York City Department of Education and New York State Education Department.
Is transportation provided?
Yes, as mandated on the student's Individualized Education Plan and arranged through the Office of Pupil Transportation.
What are the school hours?
Children attend school six hours a day, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The HeartShare School provides a 12-month program for their students.
How can I enroll my child into The HeartShare School?
Your child must be referred to The HeartShare School by the Department of Education's Central Based Support Team (CBST). CBST refers children to non-public school placements when there is no appropriate program available within the public school system.
How is The HeartShare School funded?
The HeartShare School is funded by the New York State Education Department and the New York City Department of Education.
