HeartShare Staff Honored for Efforts During Sandy

January 25, 2013

Celebrations

On Friday, January 25, 2013, staff members from HeartShare’s Residential Programs were honored for their extraordinary efforts during and after Superstorm Sandy hit New York City. Thirteen staff members representing the Josephine and Joseph Abatemarco Residence, Clinton Residence, Clare and Frank Torre Residence, Community Living Program, and Maintenance Staff were recognized as Heroes Among Us by the Brooklyn Developmental Disabilities Council. The event recognized the heroic efforts of Direct Support Professionals and others during Superstorm Sandy.

Held at Brooklyn Borough Hall, 21 additional agencies received recognition for their staff members as well. New York State Assemblyman Jim Brennan and New York City Councilman Vincent Gentile spoke to the honorees and expressed their deep appreciation for the hard work everyone put forth at such a difficult time.

“These employees put the needs of the individuals we care for above their own,” said Linda Tempel, Executive Director of Developmental Disabilities for HeartShare. “Some worked 2 and 3 days straight because other staff was unable to make it to the residences. Others used their own vehicles to transport fellow staff members to and from shifts despite gas shortages. One woman walked from Coney Island to Bensonhurst to cover her shifts at the Abatemarco Residence, and another came into the office at MetroTech to do her program’s payroll despite her own apartment in Far Rockaway being destroyed in the storm.”

“We have truly dedicated staff members and I am so proud of everyone,” said William R. Guarinello, HeartShare’s President and CEO. “I extend my appreciation to them and congratulate them on this well-deserved honor.”
