Day Services

HeartShare’s Day Services offer inclusive, customized opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Life skills training, community volunteerism, and recreational activities, which are unique based on individual needs, interests and goals, together build independence, self-esteem and quality of life. HeartShare’s Day Habilitation Programs offer life-skills training, including personal care, managing a personal budget, learning household tasks like cooking, and navigating public transportation. Program participants also practice these skills through community volunteer opportunities at libraries, senior centers, day care centers and schools, as well as non-profit organizations. Day Services recreational activities also leverage access to all that New York has to offer, including the city’s parks, theaters, museums and shopping centers. Although these diverse activities already immerse our individuals in the New York community, HeartShare is transitioning more individuals to its Day Hab without Walls (WOW) program. Rather than meeting at a HeartShare program location, program participants meet at a store or community organization, then head to their community volunteer sites. This experience, which relies on program participants to take on professional responsibilities and relationships, invests in their employment potential.
